Defragging some areas, such as the Temp directory or your Internet cache, are just a plain waste of time. Here are some useful time-saving solutions.
  1. Make a partition to store these folders, and do not defragment them.
  2. Delete the temp files in the root, Windows, and My Documents Folder. Remove the cached files for the browser(s) you may use, and delete the Windows prefetch files too.

Note: "My Documents" is another area that should be in a different partition or at least removed from the base area. This would be the most likely defrag requirement for your main drive (unless you only have one partition or drive).

  3. The best solution is to have a second or third drive organized for frequent use,and then to defrag frequently to a backup area (hardly worth it to defrag here, unless you delete backups).
